Labouring women turn to water as a natural way to relax and relieve pain. During labour, the water essentially makes a woman weightless and allows her to concentrate on letting her body do the work it is meant to do. The weightlessness experienced by labouring mothers creates equal pressure on the submerged body.  As the mother relaxes, she feels less pain due to tension, which results in less overall anxiety and a significant reduction in stress hormones such as adrenalin. The combination of being at home in a relaxed environment and being in the water, a naturally soothing atmosphere, allows a woman to remain calm and in touch with her body during labour. Labouring in water also eliminates compression of the interior vena cava, resulting in increased blood supply to the uterus which enhances blood supply to the fetus. The same process promotes more efficient uterine contractions. This results in a shorter labour. The mild vasodilation that occurs in water decreases maternal blood pressure and increases the maternal pulse which increases oxygenation to the uterus and thus the foetus. This is a beautiful natural water birth. This is how beautiful birth can be.
